00:00:03 Paul Cardall
Hello, everybody. Welcome to Paul Cardall podcast. I'm your host, Paul Cardall. If this is the first time you're joining. Thanks for being here. Those of you that have been listening, I appreciate you.
00:00:03
And welcome to the Paul Cardall podcast.
00:00:21 Paul Cardall
And please, if you have not yet left a review that helps more people discover the podcast, and of course, subscribe and share it with somebody who you know will benefit from listening to these various topics.
00:00:36 Paul Cardall
We've been going.
00:00:38 Paul Cardall
It was pretty heavy the last couple episodes 85, we went through the various stages of grief and then last week on episode 86, I talked about guilt and grief. This is something that I've struggled with is survivor's guilt. And so you can go back and listen to that.
00:00:57 Paul Cardall
Episode, but given the fact that those are pretty heavy subjects, I want to make it a little more light today. And so I invited my good friend Ryan Morris. That's right. I'll introduce him in a minute. We'll talk more about who he is, how we met.
00:01:13 Paul Cardall
And one of the projects he's working on called Giants and Smalls, but I want to talk about a couple of things. One, I went to the Grammys and which is controversial for some people, and I want to go through talking about the Grammys and my experience as a member of the Recording Academy.
00:01:33 Paul Cardall
Why I participate and what's really going on behind the scenes? Secondly, I want to talk about the Super Bowl.
00:01:42 Paul Cardall
Those of you listening today, Sunday, the Super Bowl is tonight.
00:01:48 Paul Cardall
Those of you that are listening in the future hop back into your DeLorean and you'll realize that the Super Bowl is tonight, or the fact that you already know who won the Super Bowl. Did Taylor Swift win, or did the San Francisco 49ers?
00:02:05 Paul Cardall
So we'll talk a little bit about that.
00:02:07 Paul Cardall
I love Taylor Swift. She's an amazing person who's accomplished a lot, a lot. And then I want to talk briefly about what an incredible month this is. February, which is national hard month and from February 7th until the 14th, the focus is congenital heart disease.
00:02:27 Paul Cardall
Which I've been advocating since the day I was born, with only half a heart. So we'll dive a little bit into that, but first.
00:02:35 Paul Cardall
My good friend Ryan Morris. He's with me. We're up here at my cabin. For those of you watching.
00:02:41 Paul Cardall
On you this is not.
00:02:41 Ryan Morris
A green screen? No right above.
00:02:44 Paul Cardall
You and you'll see a sign that says gone fishing and his shirt says.
00:02:49 Ryan Morris
Do you know the muffin man?
00:02:50 Paul Cardall
Do you know the muffin man? And and my sweatshirt is representing refuge, a great leadership retreat. If you want to know anything about that, send me a mess.
00:03:01 Paul Cardall
Brian, we do this annually. Tell me a little bit about what this week is and why we do.
00:03:07 Ryan Morris
It first of all, like I ran into Paul card all because of we can I tell my story a.
00:03:12 Ryan Morris
Little bit of how I ran.
00:03:13 Paul Cardall
Across you. Yes, yes you can.
00:03:15 Ryan Morris
There he was on the side of the road.
00:03:17 Paul Cardall
He ran but ran across me.
00:03:20 Ryan Morris
Across which is it? It goes way, way back. My, his, his grandma.
00:03:28 Ryan Morris
Was actually it, my dad's church leader, way, way back and got him active in his in his church and and things like that. We didn't know that.
00:03:38 Ryan Morris
At the time.
00:03:39 Paul Cardall
Well, it's a very long time.
00:03:40 Paul Cardall
Ago, grandma was 100 when she passed.
00:03:42 Ryan Morris
We yeah, we were not born yet.
00:03:45 Paul Cardall
So that would have been like 80 years ago.
00:03:47 Ryan Morris
That was a long time.
00:03:48 Paul Cardall
64.
00:03:48 Ryan Morris
He was like my dad.
00:03:51 Ryan Morris
So I mean it was a, it was a.
00:03:52 Ryan Morris
Long time ago though. But.
00:03:54 Ryan Morris
Anyway, Fast forward. I found out about Paul Cardell's music. If you don't, if you don't know about his music, you need to listen to his piano music because it is insane. Amazing. The most peaceful music ever had a neighbor. Thank you. You're welcome. And I mean, it's true. So.
00:04:06 Paul Cardall
Thank you.
00:04:10 Paul Cardall
Like I appreciate.
00:04:11 Ryan Morris
That welcome. I'll do.
00:04:11 Paul Cardall
Thank you.
00:04:12 Ryan Morris
I'll do a bunch of that.
00:04:15 Ryan Morris
But I had a neighbor who he would he would go like the long distance runs. So 100 mile in the mountain type runs, 200 mile runs.
00:04:22 Paul Cardall
Was this Forrest Gump?
00:04:23 Ryan Morris
I mean, you would think that he was Forrest Gump running from something like I don't. Obviously, I don't run. I mean, I'm not as slim as Paul and I like food, but Paul called me a sugar feed earlier because that's right. That's true. But he would go run these huge mountain runs. And and I said, what do you do for inspiration? I was so.
00:04:42 Ryan Morris
Curious and he said.
00:04:43 Ryan Morris
You're gonna laugh at me. And I said no. Dude, what do you do? And he goes.
00:04:47 Ryan Morris
I'm like, do you listen to like heavy metal like I?
00:04:49 Ryan Morris
Would be like, you know, like, yeah, dude.
00:04:51 Paul Cardall
Don't you think he's listening to journey?
00:04:53 Paul Cardall
Right, because he's on.
00:04:54 Paul Cardall
A journey.
00:04:55 Paul Cardall
Don't stop leaving and running.
00:04:57 Ryan Morris
Yeah, something. And no, almost the exact opposite. He is listening to peaceful piano by Paul Cardall and listening to this music because it brings him into touch with, like, what's really important in nature in his body.
00:05:11 Ryan Morris
And he says he's running. It just gives him inspiration and hope and and and all this stuff. And I'm like, that's incredible. Yeah. So I start listening to your music.
00:05:21 Ryan Morris
Not knowing.
00:05:21 Paul Cardall
You or you're a country music fan suit.
00:05:23 Ryan Morris
I'm a country music fan. I just like music, period. So music in general, but yes, country is probably one of my favorites, but I'll listen. Anything grow up playing the piano like music is my thing.
00:05:25 Paul Cardall
OK, OK.
00:05:34 Ryan Morris
So Fast forward a little bit further down the line about six months, my friend Nick Smith wrote a book called The Giants and Smalls, and he it's this. Here you can show it if you want to, but I it's a pretty cool book. This what didn't exist at the time. This, the the way it is now. He had it on his computer that was.
00:05:54 Ryan Morris
He and I ran across Richard Paul Evans, who's written what, 40, something New York time. Best selling books? Yeah.
00:06:01 Paul Cardall
Richard, for those that know my career, he's the one that asked me to do the Christmas box inspired by his New York Times best seller and one of my mentors, and understanding how to market hurt.
00:06:14 Paul Cardall
Yeah. So great, great man.
00:06:16 Ryan Morris
Yeah. So we were like he we ran into him at this mastermind. He's he saw some of the images from the book said, hey, you gotta come to my author ready. Retreat and we said OK and not me I didn't say OK. I just wanted to go up at night to eat dinner. I'm not the author right cuz I.
00:06:31 Ryan Morris
Just like hanging out with people.
00:06:34 Ryan Morris
And so I went up to this retreat at night, Nick went to the, went to the courses during the day and the first night I'm sitting in the hotel lobby is at the Zermatt in in Hebrew midway, Utah. Beautiful resort. Yeah. Beautiful place. And and I'm sitting there and there's a fire going. And there's, you know, it's a cold night. And in walks this guy's well dressed dude.
00:06:54 Ryan Morris
And he comes to sit down and there's tons of open spaces and he comes and he sits like, right next to and says, hey, do you mind if I sit here?
00:07:02 Ryan Morris
And I was like.
00:07:02 Paul Cardall
There's an open seat. Yeah, and I look over. And I was like.
00:07:05 Ryan Morris
My sugar.
00:07:06 Ryan Morris
You know, and he goes. Hey, my name's Paul.
00:07:09 Ryan Morris
And then it clicked and I'm like I and I said, I know they could have, you know, I mean, I'm sure he gets that everywhere he.
00:07:16 Ryan Morris
Goes but it.
00:07:17 Ryan Morris
Was like Ohh and I was like, yeah, I've. I've heard your music and I'm.
00:07:21 Ryan Morris
A big fan.
00:07:23 Ryan Morris
And told them the story how I came across this music. But from that point on we became.
00:07:28 Ryan Morris
Really great friends. I came up every night for the retreat. Just we've we've started hanging out quite a bit every time he's in town, we usually connect, go to dinner. Those kinds of things. And and Paul said, hey, you know what? I think I'm going to get a group of guys together and and he loves to go camping up in Wyoming.
00:07:46 Ryan Morris
And he said, let's get a group of guys that go up there and and just be with nature and all this stuff. And I said, I'm in, I'm in, let's do it. And so got it. That's how that whole thing started. And we and now because. But Paul is who he is. He he loves people. He talks to people and finds out their story. He's he's well connected with all of these different people and he invites.
00:08:08 Ryan Morris
Certain people that he feels needs to come and and come to a men's retreat comes to something where.
00:08:14 Paul Cardall
Yeah, and sometimes it's strangers that God just.
00:08:17 Paul Cardall
Like Jordan puts into our life.
00:08:19 Ryan Morris
You should tell that story about Jordan.
00:08:22 Paul Cardall
You can go back to an earlier episode with Jordan Bell. It's actually one of the most downloaded podcast episodes. He was he was.
00:08:30 Paul Cardall
On the show.
00:08:31 Paul Cardall
Alone, he's a survivalist and when I watched the show he mentioned he had a daughter born with congenital heart disease.
00:08:41 Paul Cardall
And that connected with me because I was born with the same thing, but she passed away. And so I reached out to him.
00:08:50 Paul Cardall
Because I wanted to, I don't know. I just felt like I needed to connect with him and I brought him up to the men's retreat because to me, I think it's very important for men.
00:09:01 Paul Cardall
To gather men need friends because you know, we grow up, we have our friends, and then we go off into the business world and we focus so much on the survival aspect and family that a lot of our friendships at work are transactional.
00:09:17 Paul Cardall
And we really.
00:09:18 Paul Cardall
Need to have fellowship.
00:09:20 Ryan Morris
Very surface level sometimes you know.
00:09:23 Paul Cardall
Yeah, this is something Jesus taught. He wants us to gather together in a very private, trustworthy space with people we don't see all the time.
00:09:33 Paul Cardall
These are not friends that you're constantly calling. These are people where there's a commitment. Hey, we're going to show up at this event every year. Go around.
00:09:44 Paul Cardall
Around the fire and just hear things.
00:09:46 Paul Cardall
We're grateful for.
00:09:47 Paul Cardall
And it evolves in it as powerful.
00:09:51 Paul Cardall
Powerful life changing thing like Jordan. We always pray. I like to pray at these events, Jordan. We asked him at the last night. The first time. Do you want to pray? And he's like, why?
00:10:04 Paul Cardall
Not, but he.
00:10:05 Paul Cardall
Never prayed, right? Never prayed before and.
00:10:10 Paul Cardall
The week was so impactful.
00:10:11 Paul Cardall
And all of us that.
00:10:14 Paul Cardall
His prayer was one of the most beautiful.
00:10:18 Paul Cardall
Conversations with God.
00:10:21 Paul Cardall
He said Heavenly Father, clearly like he knew that was his spiritual dead creator and he was just beautiful. So these are the.
00:10:30 Paul Cardall
Types of things shared all of the thanks in his.
00:10:32 Ryan Morris
Heart and and.
00:10:33 Paul Cardall
Like Ohh so good.
00:10:35 Paul Cardall
So we try to recreate these events in the winter time at the cabin sleigh riding, snowmobiling.
00:10:43 Paul Cardall
Food this guy is a chef.
00:10:49 Paul Cardall
Just very he's one of the most selfless.
00:10:53 Paul Cardall
You know those people in your life that are the most selfless? They always volunteer.
00:10:59 Paul Cardall
They're they're the guy that stacks the chairs when nobody is helping the guy that volunteers to go get all the food and then cook it for everybody. Ryan is one of the most.
00:11:11 Paul Cardall
He does exactly what?
00:11:12 Paul Cardall
Us is inviting us all to do.
00:11:15 Paul Cardall
Which is to serve one another.
00:11:17 Paul Cardall
So good man, love this guy. So yeah. So that's how we met. That's why we're.
00:11:23 Paul Cardall
Doing this retreat.
00:11:24 Paul Cardall
So let's.
00:11:26 Ryan Morris
Are we on here 3 or 4?
00:11:28 Paul Cardall
Like 4th the 4th year, some of the same guys come from strangers in the beginning and now every now and then we.
00:11:36 Paul Cardall
Invite a couple of new.
00:11:37 Paul Cardall
People and it's life changing.
00:11:41 Paul Cardall
So like hey.
00:11:43 Paul Cardall
I'm not a football fan.
00:11:47 Paul Cardall
I'm a musician. I can tell you who won the Grammys. I can't tell you who is winning the Super Bowl. So we're gonna talk for those in the future that have do not have a DeLorean or no doc and can't go back into the past and relive it like it's about to happen. This is the artist in me this.
00:12:04 Paul Cardall
Is the way I talk.
00:12:06 Paul Cardall
We don't know who's going.
00:12:07 Paul Cardall
To win the Super Bowl.
00:12:09 Paul Cardall
Now one thing I have to tell you, Ryan. So I was at the Grammys.
00:12:14 Paul Cardall
And Taylor Swift is clearly one of the most.
00:12:20 Paul Cardall
Strategic artist. She's a the team around her are geniuses. When I moved to Nashville, they, the company I was with that wanted me to make music, said you're going to be in the.
00:12:22 Ryan Morris
Marketing genius.
00:12:35 Paul Cardall
Dolly Parton room. This would be my office, I said. Why is this a special room?
00:12:40 Paul Cardall
Other than it's Dolly Parton.
00:12:43 Paul Cardall
This is where Taylor Swift wrote Tim McGraw.
00:12:45 Paul Cardall
This is where Taylor's preferred this and I thought, wow, I wonder if.
00:12:50 Paul Cardall
The Taylor vibes would rub off on me. I mean, into my intricate, difficult piano music. Sure enough. But you know the great thing about Taylor? She writes very simple.
00:13:02 Paul Cardall
Talked about this. I've talked about this with very some of the most successful songwriters. What is it about Taylor Swift? Why do her songs resonate?
00:13:14 Paul Cardall
I mean, if I were to ask you, Ryan?
00:13:16 Ryan Morris
White and their songs resonate most of the time. It's at least for me, like it from my side or my view, and then maybe that's something different and you know the inside world of writing songs and creating a song and all that stuff. For me it's it's mostly it's, it's her. She writes about real life experiences and from the heart and then puts a catchy, you know, catchy music.
00:13:36 Ryan Morris
To it, but it relates to the the average person can totally grasp it.
00:13:42 Ryan Morris
So that's like me. Yeah, yeah.
00:13:45 Paul Cardall
Yeah, you're right. These teenage girls and even even men.
00:13:50 Paul Cardall
They resonate with it. The formula with Taylor is this.
00:13:56 Paul Cardall
When I when I was asked.
00:13:58 Paul Cardall
I'll give you an example what I was asked.
00:14:00 Paul Cardall
To write to.
00:14:01 Paul Cardall
Him for the LDS Church by one of their senior leaders, David Bednar, who was one of the apostles for the other church, 17,000,000 members wanted to write his song with me.
00:14:15 Paul Cardall
And it was a deeply humbling experience, and I thought, Oh my gosh, I gotta create a, like, Handel's Messiah. The pressure handles my side this this will probably go into handbook. It'll be, you know, engraving in time long before long after I'm gone and nobody cares.
00:14:36 Paul Cardall
The bottom line is he he wanted me to read.
00:14:38 Paul Cardall
This song and.
00:14:40 Paul Cardall
I was having trouble.
00:14:42 Paul Cardall
A lot of trouble. Finally in the middle of the night because he had told me you're over thinking it in the middle of the night. This little melody came to me and I woke up and I went to the piano. And this was like a simple like a.
00:14:59 Paul Cardall
Had a little lamb.
00:15:01 Paul Cardall
Or happy birthday, everyone all over the world can sing. Happy birthday, everybody. It's just it's easy.
00:15:08 Paul Cardall
And so I wrote this little melody and I recorded and I sent.
00:15:11 Paul Cardall
It off to to David Bednar Bednar, yes, and and Bednar called me.
00:15:14
No, it's.
00:15:17 Paul Cardall
Like to call.
00:15:18 Paul Cardall
By his last name.
00:15:18 Paul Cardall
Like he's a.
00:15:19 Paul Cardall
* And bednar old bedner, yeah, bednar. So Bednar called me. He would, I said, what are you doing? It's.
00:15:25 Paul Cardall
I'm at home.
00:15:25 Paul Cardall
Depot I'm already he goes. I'm fixing my roof.
00:15:30 Paul Cardall
And anyways, he said, listen, I got this song. It's perfect. It's simple. And I said, you know, I I feel like it's not strong enough. And he said look bottom line.
00:15:44 Paul Cardall
That the young boy.
00:15:46 Paul Cardall
In pro, you talk is 5.
00:15:49 Paul Cardall
And the the gentleman who is a patriarch and a grandfather in Ghana.
00:15:56 Paul Cardall
They can all sing.
00:15:57 Ryan Morris
This. Yeah, it's.
00:15:58 Paul Cardall
Simple. So why I tell you that story is because Taylor Swift understands this principle. Keep it simple, KIS. Kiss. Keep it simple, stupid. Keep it simple so everyone can resonate. You know, she started doing the country music.
00:16:15 Paul Cardall
And that resonated because she's this young girl and she wants to fall in love. She's found this formula.
00:16:23 Paul Cardall
About writing songs and people all want to fall in love, and so it's kind of a dreamy type thing. But she's evolved as an adult, and the reason we're talking about Taylor and the Super Bowl. If you live on the Moon or Mars, it's Chris Taylor.
00:16:40 Ryan Morris
Welcome to the podcast.
00:16:41 Paul Cardall
Right.
00:16:43 Paul Cardall
And this, you know, this Taylor's probably gonna sell some music after this, but Taylor is dating.
00:16:51 Paul Cardall
Travis Kelsey Kelsey Travis is one of the the most valued players in the Professional Football League NFL. What does that stand for?
00:17:03 Ryan Morris
National Football League.
00:17:04 Paul Cardall
OK, National Football League. It's like The Avengers or something.
00:17:12 Paul Cardall
Like like like the Justice League, like the Justice League. But it's the yeah, the football players. These are the guys that in high.
00:17:16 Ryan Morris
The football players just.
00:17:19 Paul Cardall
School. They'd slap each other.
00:17:21 Paul Cardall
Good, good. Sorry, good 10 things I say with friends, but Taylor and Travis TNT, they are dating and as a result, this is what's amazing. This is incredible. The Kansas City Chiefs.
00:17:42 Paul Cardall
Guess how much money they have made.
00:17:44 Paul Cardall
In merch ticket sales and support, because Taylor Swift is dating.
00:17:51 Paul Cardall
A football player on their.
00:17:52 Ryan Morris
Team, that'll be a bucket load. My, my kids. Don't call it the Chiefs. This is Taylor playing today. Yeah, it's Taylor versus the 49ers.
00:18:02 Ryan Morris
Was like what? So it's.
00:18:04 Ryan Morris
Gotta be a grundle.
00:18:05 Paul Cardall
And you see her fans, these are the swifties. That's what they're called swifties. Like swift, like, like the thing you use to clean the Swiss swiffers. So they. Yeah, like. Sorry.
00:18:17 Ryan Morris
Like groupies like they were groupies back in the day. They'd follow bands all over the place. Yeah, and they have a group of them.
00:18:22 Ryan Morris
But this is a.
00:18:23 Ryan Morris
Whole other strength. Yeah, this is.
00:18:24 Paul Cardall
She's got another thing.
00:18:25 Ryan Morris
A whole other ball gig.
00:18:26 Paul Cardall
And you see the TikTok videos of these 11 year old girls.
00:18:30 Paul Cardall
Whose dream is to go to a Taylor Swift concert and they're sobbing. I mean, this is like when the.
00:18:36 Paul Cardall
Beatles came over.
00:18:37 Paul Cardall
This is how popular she is and how much she resonates emotionally with people.
00:18:42 Ryan Morris
I may have cried a time or.
00:18:43 Paul Cardall
Two to Taylor's confession. This is why we.
00:18:47 Paul Cardall
Do fellowship.
00:18:48 Paul Cardall
Now we have to help him.
00:18:52 Ryan Morris
So touch.
00:18:52 Paul Cardall
So here's the amount. And if you haven't already Googled.
00:18:55 Paul Cardall
It it's reported it by the NFL.
00:19:00 Paul Cardall
331 million.
00:19:04 Paul Cardall
Dollars to the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:19:08 Paul Cardall
300 and that's just one sheep.
00:19:10 Paul Cardall
$1,000,000 to the Chiefs.
00:19:12 Ryan Morris
That's not all. The other impact that she's had, the economic impact that she's had now.
00:19:18 Paul Cardall
Everything she touches turns to gold. Now I'm a member of the Recording Academy, and every year as a member of the Recording Academy.
00:19:30 Paul Cardall
My music gets put onto a ballot along with musicians all over the.
00:19:34 Paul Cardall
World and as a voting member, I get to vote for five people artists in the various categories that I'm involved with. I can only I can only vote for five people in five categories.
00:19:50 Paul Cardall
So I got the new age category.
00:19:54 Paul Cardall
People will know about new age category. It's not on people magazines. It's OK new. It was like Yanni in the days. Right? George Winston? Yeah, that's me. I just don't have that hair that he has good looking.
00:20:08 Paul Cardall
Hair. Well, thank you.
00:20:09 Paul Cardall
So new age, which I love, you know, so the new age.
00:20:13 Paul Cardall
Music and.
00:20:17 Paul Cardall
Contemporary classical people are composing new classical music. The Josh Groban's the movies I could go on and on. Yeah, on the Ray Bocelli.
00:20:30 Paul Cardall
Did I say that?
00:20:31 Ryan Morris
Right, I don't know, but.
00:20:32 Ryan Morris
It sounds good to me. OK, porcelli.
00:20:34 Paul Cardall
Sounds like a.
00:20:35 Paul Cardall
Like a pasta dish. Sounds delicious. Sounds delicious. So. And then contemporary Christian and then non classical and non classical engineering, which sound like the most fascinating categories.
00:20:54 Paul Cardall
And if you're watching that, this is all gonna.
00:20:56 Paul Cardall
Lead up to Taylor.
00:20:57 Paul Cardall
There are 90 awards given out to artists and producers and engineers across all genres. Because in America we like to categorize things into groups and I've been in record stores.
00:21:14 Paul Cardall
In Europe, they categorize it good music and bad.
00:21:19 Ryan Morris
Making things a lot.
00:21:20 Paul Cardall
Hey, what's this in the corner?
00:21:22 Paul Cardall
Well, that's some good.
00:21:23 Paul Cardall
Stuff what's in this side? It's not selling.
00:21:26 Ryan Morris
It's done selling.
00:21:27 Paul Cardall
Yeah. So I have always wondered where.
00:21:30 Paul Cardall
I would be in.
00:21:30 Paul Cardall
The as a.
00:21:32 Paul Cardall
Classical dust for contemporary new age Christian.
00:21:36 Paul Cardall
See, it's complicated. It's complicated, so.
00:21:41 Paul Cardall
One of the challenges of all those in the 90 awards you really need to be with a record label that has a lot of clout. I own my own record label.
00:21:53 Paul Cardall
The artists that own their labels.
00:21:57 Paul Cardall
Are earning majority of the income. So when you are streaming my music I get majority of.
00:22:03 Paul Cardall
The income and I love you for it.
00:22:05 Paul Cardall
And my wife does too.
00:22:07 Paul Cardall
And then those with record labels like somebody's tooth.
00:22:10 Ryan Morris
Prince too, because that he gets to hang out.
00:22:12 Paul Cardall
With Sony and Capital, all these labels, the artists get a portion.
00:22:19 Paul Cardall
And So what you saw on the broadcast, on CBS, the Grammys, every year on CBS, you only see nine awards.
00:22:31 Paul Cardall
In the 2 1/2 hour broadcast handed.
00:22:34 Ryan Morris
Out. They're like the biggest and the most prestigious.
00:22:37 Paul Cardall
These are not the biggest selling.
00:22:40 Paul Cardall
The TV producers and press people for the Grammys, they and the advertisers decide who is going.
00:22:50 Paul Cardall
To perform in order.
00:22:52 Paul Cardall
To draw an audience they want.
00:22:57 Paul Cardall
Controversy course because if you get to Sam Smith up there singing like last year dressed as the Devil, people like people assume. Yeah, because people assume it's a satanic ritual, which is not true. What Sam was doing is acting out.
00:23:08 Ryan Morris
About it everywhere.
00:23:17 Paul Cardall
That there are mean people in the world and they're devils. This year we had.
00:23:25 Paul Cardall
Olivia. Rodrigo. She did this song, and it's all in red. And so again, you get these people going. This was devil worshipping. It's a song about vampires.
00:23:37 Paul Cardall
And how they destroy our lives. So in the song, if you go to the lyrics, it's spell vampires. Who doesn't resonate with that when you're 17 years old. The Mystery of Dracula 42. I have not written a song about Dracula.
00:23:57 Paul Cardall
I don't know that I ever will.
00:23:59 Paul Cardall
But she did so. It's very popular. Billy Joel performed. Yeah, that was because it's the first song he's written in 17 years. Now, when you're at the Grammys and I'm there, I've gone for several years.
00:24:14 Paul Cardall
Those that are nominated in those top 9 categories.
00:24:19 Paul Cardall
All sit in the tables and every performer that is performing most of those people are sitting down. Most of them are nervous because they don't know if they're going to win.
00:24:32 Paul Cardall
Most of them are just grateful they're they're but Taylor Swift. She knows cameras are watching.
00:24:41 Paul Cardall
And she knows everybody else is watching, but she's also.
00:24:46 Paul Cardall
A huge fan of.
00:24:46 Paul Cardall
Music she stands up during every performance.
00:24:50 Ryan Morris
Sings with them and dance and.
00:24:51 Ryan Morris
Sings the song. She knows the song, knows it all. It's crazy to watch. Absolutely crazy. She she knows them all. She does and doesn't miss a word. I'd be up there and probably bought you every single one.
00:25:04 Paul Cardall
Of those.
00:25:05 Paul Cardall
You've got a great voice from Metallica to.
00:25:09 Paul Cardall
App to Olivia Rodrigo to she Can't Sing along with me, and that's OK. So made a nice pillow. Her Travis can light a candle and and.
00:25:21 Paul Cardall
You could talk sports, talk sports.
00:25:25 Paul Cardall
But I have a respect for Taylor in in.
00:25:28 Paul Cardall
In the essence.
00:25:28 Paul Cardall
That she is.
00:25:31 Paul Cardall
Publicly encouraging other people to support other.
00:25:35 Ryan Morris
Artists she genuinely cares. I think she, like you can see it. How the excitement when somebody else wins, she claps. She's smiling for them.
00:25:43 Ryan Morris
Yeah, even if it's not her that's winning, which almost seems like it is.
00:25:48 Paul Cardall
What's also interesting is on the red carpet.
00:25:53 Paul Cardall
She does try to get in everyone's photos.
00:25:55 Paul Cardall
She's a photo bomber. She looks. But if you can get Taylor Swift into your photo again, maybe you're the Kansas City Chiefs and you'll make 300.
00:26:05 Ryan Morris
$31 million that you will superimpose Taylor, right?
00:26:07 Paul Cardall
Here. Yeah. So.
00:26:12 Paul Cardall
What's your?
00:26:12 Ryan Morris
You think should come to our men's retreat.
00:26:14 Paul Cardall
Can you sing one of her?
00:26:16 Paul Cardall
Briefly, just what's the what's the queries? That.
00:26:19 Paul Cardall
Tim McGraw do.
00:26:19 Paul Cardall
You know that one.
00:26:22 Ryan Morris
When you think Tim McGraw, I can't. I don't know. I hope. Yeah. I don't know. I'd have to. I'd have to replay that in my head. But yeah, you put me on the spot, and I don't like I'm nervous. Like.
00:26:30 Paul Cardall
OK, he's there. I know he's.
00:26:34 Paul Cardall
He's not much of A swifty. I'm gonna.
00:26:36 Ryan Morris
No, I love Taylor Swift.
00:26:38 Ryan Morris
I'm just gonna botch your stuff, but.
00:26:40 Ryan Morris
Now, if you notice on my stuff like what I do with the content that I do.
00:26:43 Paul Cardall
Yeah, TikTok, you single.
00:26:44 Ryan Morris
I haven't done any Taylor Swift songs.
00:26:47 Paul Cardall
I'll put a link.
00:26:47 Ryan Morris
To that in and that probably should do one or two, I'll do. I'll do it. I'll do, I'll.
00:26:52 Paul Cardall
Tell you. Are you ready for it?
00:26:52 Ryan Morris
Swift song.
00:26:55 Ryan Morris
So we won't be that.
00:26:56 Paul Cardall
One, Are you ready?
00:26:57 Ryan Morris
For it, maybe shake it off, I don't know, but I could do Tim McGraw.
00:27:02 Paul Cardall
That's a good song because we're on the snow right now and.
00:27:04 Paul Cardall
Like anyways.
00:27:05 Ryan Morris
Trey, he's sorry everybody following that, but I.
00:27:07 Paul Cardall
With wet snitching.
00:27:10 Paul Cardall
But. But here's what's interesting. I've heard so many people complain about Taylor, and I'm I'll admit, there's been moments where I'm like I.
00:27:17 Paul Cardall
I don't get.
00:27:18 Paul Cardall
It people don't get it, but after careful consideration you can research I I've wanted to understand it, but people.
00:27:30 Paul Cardall
Love it and cheer people to rise in success.
00:27:36 Paul Cardall
Ohh Ryan, what is it about?
00:27:39 Paul Cardall
Why do people like to see people that are successful, full, full, I think.
00:27:45 Ryan Morris
Inside, they're all living vicariously. They can relate. They want people to do well. Most people are still good, and they want people to succeed, and so they see people succeed, and then they they've got this, you know, they like.
00:27:59 Ryan Morris
Her as a person. They like what she's doing. They like her music, it touches them.
00:28:05 Ryan Morris
At least in my opinion, that's what they relate to it. And so again, they want her to do well because that's a sliver of what they would hope, you know, for themselves, insecurities.
00:28:16 Ryan Morris
Probably a little bit, you know, like it talks to their fears, it speaks to their insecurities, that speaks to their their grief. It speaks to their emotions and and that's she's really, really good at connecting those, those things where you might not have experienced exactly those things, but you can look at your own life and go.
00:28:36 Ryan Morris
Ohh my gosh. Yeah, for me this was this.
00:28:40 Ryan Morris
And go right into that, that feeling, that emotion, that that, that place and time, because of what she's doing.
00:28:48 Paul Cardall
Oh, totally agree. Totally agree. I think also.
00:28:54 Paul Cardall
I think parents often are worried when your children get into music.
00:29:00 Paul Cardall
And I understand this, my 11 year old Eliza.
00:29:05 Paul Cardall
She's getting into.
00:29:05 Paul Cardall
Music. But she's listening to what her siblings are loving. And because my daughter Eden.
00:29:12 Paul Cardall
He is a recording artist about to drop her third single. Let me plug that. It's called good to.
00:29:18 Ryan Morris
You. That's awesome.
00:29:21 Paul Cardall
Yeah. So when you're asking Alexa to play Paul Cardell, ask Alexa to play Eden Cardol, and I'm so grateful. She's.
00:29:32 Paul Cardall
She's got those gifts in order to.
00:29:35 Paul Cardall
Process emotions that 1718 year olds are.
00:29:39 Paul Cardall
Dealing with.
00:29:42 Paul Cardall
But my youngest is now listening to music that.
00:29:44 Paul Cardall
They listen to.
00:29:46 Paul Cardall
And so I can imagine parents who.
00:29:49 Paul Cardall
Watch these artists that your kids follow, evolve and you start to get frustrated by their political beliefs.
00:29:58 Paul Cardall
By supporting the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:30:03 Paul Cardall
But that's Andy Reed's team and Andy Reid coached at BYU and we're in Utah, so we're pretty loyal to Brigham Young University. My grandfather built the stadium, so enough bragging about BYU.
00:30:18 Paul Cardall
You can leave BYU, but you'll never let BYU wait. What is it? You can leave BYU, but you'll never leave.
00:30:23 Ryan Morris
BYU. That's true. That's true.
00:30:27 Paul Cardall
I I love that team. I love everything about the school anyways. We're not talking about. Are you back to Taylor Swift?
00:30:36 Paul Cardall
Like what the which is a which is a a lot to think about because she's so fascinating.
00:30:42 Paul Cardall
And it's not my world of entertainment.
00:30:49 Paul Cardall
Because the pop culture world is so different from.
00:30:53 Paul Cardall
The world that I'm in, that I'm more the tortoise versus the hare. Classical music does last longer and there was a point where we were actually out streaming.
00:31:05 Paul Cardall
Taylor Swift on Pandora.
00:31:06 Ryan Morris
Got a few strings there buddy.
00:31:08 Paul Cardall
Wait, but it shifted.
00:31:10 Ryan Morris
To Taylor, how many are you up?
00:31:11 Ryan Morris
To now it.
00:31:12 Paul Cardall
Doesn't matter. Does a little. You know, if they're willing to listen to us ramble, go listen to the music, to take a breather to your to your point though, like with parents like.
00:31:14 Paul Cardall
What everybody is doing.
00:31:25 Ryan Morris
You watch an artist and then you know you're listening to it, and especially seems like new artists. There's this moment where they start to break out and you're wondering, is this person going to hold up with morals and character and all these different things? I would say that, Taylor, for the most part, even though she has her own political views and some of them might disagree with, and I agree.
00:31:46 Ryan Morris
You know, I agree with a lot of things. I can respect her beliefs and where she's at, but also watch her.
00:31:53 Ryan Morris
How she carries herself, how she treats others with kindness, how she leads with love.
00:31:57 Ryan Morris
Yeah, you know.
00:31:58 Ryan Morris
Even though we don't agree 100%, I mean you probably don't agree 100% on everything. Well, there's probably things.
00:32:04 Paul Cardall
No, you like sugar.
00:32:07 Ryan Morris
Yeah, and yeah, that's truth. But you could see like as a parent, you're like, OK, just watch this artist and see how they're gonna do. You don't want them, like, going down a path that's that's, you know, or that's they start idolizing somebody of sorts and they say, look, you up to and then they go.
00:32:24 Ryan Morris
Uh, but Taylor Swift's impact she'd something's different than than a Britney Spears and no offense to any of these people. Miley C.
00:32:32 Paul Cardall
There is.
00:32:32 Ryan Morris
They went down some really weird paths and Taylor had a little moment there for a minute trying to figure out who she was, but she's always led with love, kindness, respect and that is what I think people just see. They feel and then they are loyal as heck to somebody.
00:32:52 Ryan Morris
Like that because it's good. It's just good.
00:32:55 Paul Cardall
That's sure, it's like following George Strait. Yeah, or Tim McGraw or any of these amazing artists, just like me with the band Rush.
00:33:04 Paul Cardall
Fiercely loyal. Listen to them from the beginning. In fact, this year marks when they gave us when God gave us through rush.
00:33:14 Paul Cardall
Tom Sawyer. So that's it's been a great, great week. This was when they actually released moving pictures, but you mentioned Miley Cyrus. She won Song of the Year. Yeah. First, first numbers, first Grammy, which actually surprised me. I didn't know that because she's an incredible singer. I have respect for her.
00:33:34 Paul Cardall
Because her husband cheated on her.
00:33:39 Paul Cardall
And her response through her pain.
00:33:43 Paul Cardall
Words I can buy myself flowers.
00:33:49 Paul Cardall
And it's such a good song. It's so catchy. It's another one where it gives wit and confidence, even men. When somebody just blows you off and makes you feel horrible. You have so much value.
00:34:03 Paul Cardall
And she's putting that message out. The other artist I learned to respect is Billie Eilish.
00:34:10 Paul Cardall
Her brother Phineas, is one of the best songwriters who pianists writes their songs.
00:34:17 Paul Cardall
But I was in London with Eden, Eden, Cardell. She's dropping a new single. Good to you. I was with her in London and it said that Billie Eilish was in concert and in London. Tickets are cheaper.
00:34:34 Paul Cardall
Than the United States, they don't.
00:34:36 Paul Cardall
I don't know the promoters do.
00:34:37 Paul Cardall
Not rip you off it.
00:34:38 Paul Cardall
Was it was only $50.
00:34:40 Ryan Morris
A ticket. Wow, please.
00:34:42 Paul Cardall
And I was a little cautious about going to.
00:34:45 Paul Cardall
You know.
00:34:46 Paul Cardall
Billy Eilish I'm a parent, the Prince of the lyrics.
00:34:51 Paul Cardall
And then with my daughter next to me, I read them and I ask if this benefits society right. I got that from Sting though. So every now and then I pull out some N.W.A Public Enemy or Ice cube, print the lyrics and it.
00:35:00 Ryan Morris
What's this lyrics here? That's actually probably not bad.
00:35:10 Ryan Morris
Sorry, mom and dad. I've listened to a lot of inappropriate music from that.
00:35:10 Paul Cardall
Was just been.
00:35:13 Paul Cardall
Yeah, Nirvana.
00:35:18 Paul Cardall
I went to Billy and it was amazing because Billy had a crane there. She could have used this space to sell more tickets, but it's a crane that would lift her up and put her within 20 yards of every person.
00:35:32 Ryan Morris
In the area, kind of like pink does where she's like, goes around the the the on the trapeze type stuff and.
00:35:37 Ryan Morris
It's pretty close. She gets, I mean.
00:35:40 Ryan Morris
I don't know. 10-15 yards.
00:35:41 Paul Cardall
Did you go to a dance concert?
00:35:43 Paul Cardall
That's he's going to admit it. Pink. She's like an area of Acrobat, but anyways.
00:35:51 Ryan Morris
Billy is amazing.
00:35:52 Paul Cardall
Billy, this is what she said at her concert.
00:35:56 Paul Cardall
She said I want all.
00:35:58 Paul Cardall
The young women in here to know.
00:36:01 Paul Cardall
That you're amazing. You're valued. You're worthy and.
00:36:09 Paul Cardall
Watch ****.
00:36:11 Paul Cardall
Billy said it ruined her life.
00:36:14 Paul Cardall
She'd seen it since she was nine years old. It just wrecked her idea of.
00:36:21 Paul Cardall
A normal, healthy sexual relationship with somebody who you're committed to with the covenant and.
00:36:33 Paul Cardall
I was so grateful that through this hero that so many of these young people admire, she was feeding them truth.
00:36:46 Paul Cardall
And guess what? The best artists do is when you.
00:36:50 Paul Cardall
Convey things you've been through in order to try to help your audience.
00:36:57 Paul Cardall
Not go through these things. I once had a spiritual leader. This was my mission. President said. It takes a wise man to learn from their own experiences. It takes a wiser man to learn from other people's experiences. And so you know, there's a lot to be.
00:37:17 Paul Cardall
Learned from these artists.
00:37:18 Ryan Morris
Watch the Billie Eilish documents.
00:37:21 Ryan Morris
And I was impressed that she lives. She actually comes from like her mom and her brother were super amazing people and and very down to earth with all of the the fame and the things that have happened to her, very, very down.
00:37:35 Paul Cardall
To earth, they still live in a very modest home.
00:37:38 Paul Cardall
Yeah. So, yeah, great respect for those artists.
00:37:41 Paul Cardall
And I'm.
00:37:43 Paul Cardall
The other thing I want to say.
00:37:44 Paul Cardall
About the Grammys, is that so? The evening broadcast is only 9 Grammys awarded. I go to a pre ceremony where the majority of the other awards are given out and there were Christian performances from some of my favorite Christian artists like Kirk Franklin. He took everyone to church.
00:38:04 Paul Cardall
Everyone at church. So it was beautiful. And then finally, I just want to leave you guys with.
00:38:11 Paul Cardall
The fact that.
00:38:15 Paul Cardall
The fact that we're being interrupted real quickly because our good friend Jordan, who we mentioned earlier, the road is quite snowy to get up here.
00:38:24 Paul Cardall
So he's gonna plow through, he says. Plow through.
00:38:26 Ryan Morris
This this is this is just this is just so you know the fire nature today is extremely low. There's a sign that says today.
00:38:37 Ryan Morris
It's got snow all over it.
00:38:39 Ryan Morris
So it's, he says. I just want you to be aware that that the fire danger is is low.
00:38:47 Paul Cardall
So is he is.
00:38:48 Ryan Morris
He close? Yeah, but it's a minute we can.
00:38:50 Paul Cardall
So finally what I want to just say is that.
00:38:58 Paul Cardall
Chiefs go 49ers and if you guys want to throw a skin.
00:39:04 Paul Cardall
Pigskin around great if that helps the world. But anyways, Grammys was amazing, and this week, of course, is national congenital heart disease.
00:39:19 Paul Cardall
This a couple of years ago I put out an album called Saving Tiny Hearts features some of my most requested songs like Life and Death, and Gracie's theme. Every time you stream that album.
00:39:32 Paul Cardall
A portion of that from Anthem Entertainment, who owns that album, now gives it to saving Tiny Hearts Society, a 501 that has a board of.
00:39:45 Paul Cardall
Really prestigious doctors, these doctors decide, and I was on this board once as a professional patient because I've been in the hospital so many times. Where should this funding go and we do grassroots.
00:40:01 Paul Cardall
Federal funding for grants.
00:40:04 Paul Cardall
To further education, greater research and technology. I'm alive.
00:40:10 Paul Cardall
Because of the advancements in technology, I want other people.
00:40:14 Paul Cardall
Born with congenital heart disease, the leading cause of infant related deaths, the least funded of all major diseases. Sometimes because you can't see it, you can't see it.
00:40:25 Paul Cardall
So you know how do.
00:40:26 Paul Cardall
You know it. Plus it's children, yeah.
00:40:31 Paul Cardall
But it is so important that we are aware of it. There's so many things you can contribute to if you go to my website paulcardell.com, there's a link to saving tiny hearts to learn more.
00:40:46 Paul Cardall
That organization what you can.
00:40:47 Paul Cardall
Do to help fund this and basically just listen to saving tiny hearts. The other thing is we have a scholarship for students.
00:40:58 Paul Cardall
Affected by congenital heart disease that want to go to Salt Lake Community College, they have a lot of medical bills.
00:41:05 Paul Cardall
And this is an amazing Community College I went to, got an associates degree. They gave me an honorary doctorate. But I don't know the community colleges can do that. But the board of trustees agreed. And I love this college.
00:41:20 Paul Cardall
And if you're on a high school and you have a heart defect.
00:41:24 Paul Cardall
Go to my website.
00:41:25 Paul Cardall
And click on the scholarship link.
00:41:28 Ryan Morris
I went to that school for a semester.
00:41:31 Ryan Morris
Slick, we called.
00:41:32 Ryan Morris
It slick Bruins, I think it is.
00:41:34 Paul Cardall
The brutes. Goats.
00:41:36 Paul Cardall
I've got campuses all over Utah and the non resident.
00:41:41 Paul Cardall
The fees are still reasonable, so the scholarship applies to non residents.

Can I say one more thing real quick? Is that cool? Just kind of to tie this all in too? If you're wondering, like you see the impact that somebody like Taylor Swift has, you see the impact that somebody like a Paul Cardell, a Jordan Bell, who's on his way up here, who's had on the on the season alone, you see those impacts and and I appreciate that, Paul too, this wasn't a plug for me. This is actually a plug for you.
00:41:47 Paul Cardall
OK, right. Yeah, man.
00:42:08 Ryan Morris
The plug for not not me and.
00:42:10 Paul Cardall
You, the giant *****. More giants in the world.
00:42:10 Paul Cardall
For Nick too.
00:42:12 Ryan Morris
Today it's Nick Smith, but this is a yeah. And so this is a plug for you at home that's sitting here watching this and that follows Paul or follows Taylor or follows Travis Kelsey or whoever. Sometimes you wonder about your impact. It's it. You could. There are people that will have a giant impact 300 and.
00:42:30 Ryan Morris
$31 million because she's dating Travis Kelsey. That's.
00:42:35 Ryan Morris
Crazy. Most of us won't ever see anywhere close to that collectively, probably everybody watching this podcast and everybody coming up here, that's a lot of money.
00:42:44 Ryan Morris
But it's the small it's the simple things. It's the hugs, it's the high fives. It's the the check-ins on your friends, it's the smiles at the grocery store. It's the opening, a door, being kind. It's what's in here. And that's what Paul talks about. That's why it's important. It's cause it's not just a physical heart.
00:43:03 Ryan Morris
Paul Cardall has has been through the ringer and his with his heart.
00:43:08 Ryan Morris
But he has the most heart of justice about any person that I've ever.
00:43:12 Ryan Morris
Met my entire life.
00:43:13 Ryan Morris
So you can have that same impact that Paul's having with other people, with men on these men's men's retreats that Taylor Swift is having just by being kind and using your heart. So that's all. That's what I had.
00:43:26 Paul Cardall
To say love this.
00:43:27 Paul Cardall
Guy Ryan Morris, I'm going to put a link to the TikTok and the link to the Giants book. Really great, really great story and they've got their own podcast giants and smalls he hosts.
00:43:40 Paul Cardall
It it's hilarious and very informative. So This is why I hang out with this guy, he.
00:43:41 Ryan Morris
I've been on twice.
00:43:47 Paul Cardall
You know, you gotta brag about your friends. You gotta build your friends up. So, alright, until next week. Episode 87 is over.
00:43:55 Paul Cardall

00:44:00 Paul Cardall
Learn about the scholarship and.
00:44:04 Paul Cardall
I don't know. Who do you think's gonna?
00:44:05 Paul Cardall
Win the Super Bowl.
00:44:07 Ryan Morris
Oh, I mean, both sides have a great story too. Hardy with the quarterback is, you know, young rookie quarterback, not making a lot of money and you know, he's a God fearing guy too. So I mean, it could go either way, but whoever wins is going to win. And I, I mean, I'm probably more of a Chiefs fan than the Niners, but I like them both. Sorry, everybody. I like them both.
00:44:27 Ryan Morris
So it will be fun to watch and if you were watching.
00:44:29 Ryan Morris
In the future, you already know who won.
00:44:31 Paul Cardall
That's right. Congratulations. I I do have to say.
00:44:36 Paul Cardall
That I love the 49ers because Steve Young brought 2 Super Bowl rings after Joe Montana brought some Steve Young met him a couple of times. Love the man so the 49ers says it a dear, beautiful place in my heart from the was it the 80s or the 90s?
00:44:54 Paul Cardall
80s and.
00:44:56 Paul Cardall
Some of you.
00:44:56 Paul Cardall
Are not alive.
00:44:58 Paul Cardall
But that was a beautiful time for the 40.
00:45:01 Paul Cardall
Andy Reid is the coach of the Chiefs. I love Andy. My mother reminds me all the time that he made it till this church.
00:45:09 Paul Cardall
Even though he's got a game that day and I love that and he loves the Lord, there's so many of these guys on these football teams, such good guys. And so it's hard to pick.
00:45:20 Paul Cardall
But this has been tailors's year. She's the most awarded.
00:45:26 Paul Cardall
Uh album of the year artist. The only other people that have achieved that.
00:45:33 Paul Cardall
I think our.
00:45:37 Paul Cardall
The Beatles. Michael Jackson.
00:45:40 Paul Cardall
And not be.
00:45:42 Ryan Morris
Solidifies her in in that upper echelon, but.
00:45:45 Paul Cardall
So alright, you guys love you. We'll talk to you next week.
00:45:49 Ryan Morris

00:45:50 Ryan Morris
Too cause you too.

00:46:12 Paul Cardall
